RESUMO

Living with AsthmaAsthma is a highly prevalent disease. Although most people with asthma can be treated effectively with certain inhaled medicines, accessing affordable care near their homes is a challenge for many people in low- and middle-income countries. We present stories from six men, women, and children living with asthma in such countries.

In dairy cattle production, it is important to understand how inbreeding affects production, fertility, and health traits. However, there is still limited use of genomic information to estimate inbreeding, despite advancements in genotyping technologies. To address this gap, we investigated the impact of inbreeding on German Holstein dairy cattle using both pedigree-based and genomic-based inbreeding estimators. We employed one method based on pedigree information (Fped) together with 6 genomic-based methods, including 3 GCTA estimators (Fhat1, Fhat2, Fhat3), VanRaden's first method (FVR1, with observed allele frequencies and FVR0.5 when allele frequencies are set to 0.5), and one based on runs of homozygosity (Froh). Data from 24,489 cows with both phenotypes and genotypes were used, with a pedigree including 232,780 animals born between 1970 and 2018. We analyzed the effects of inbreeding depression on production, fertility, and health traits separately, using single-trait linear animal models as well as threshold models to account for the binary nature of the health traits. For the health traits, we transformed solutions from the liability scale to a probability scale for easier interpretation. Our results showed that the mean inbreeding coefficients from all estimators ranged from -0.003 to 0.243, with negative values observed for most genomic-based methods. We found out that a 1% increase in inbreeding caused a depression ranging from 25.94 kg (Fhat1) to 40.62 kg (Fhat3), 1.18 kg (Fhat2) to 1.70 kg (Fhat3), 0.90 kg (Fhat2) to 1.45 kg (Froh and Fhat3), 0.19 (Fped) to 0.34 d (Fhat3) for 305 d milk yield, fat, protein, and calving interval respectively. The health traits showed slight changes when inbreeding was gradually increased by 5% with digital dermatitis showing rather a contrasting trend to that of mastitis which reduced the more an animal was inbred. Overall, our study highlights the importance of considering both pedigree-based and genomic-based inbreeding estimators when assessing the impact on inbreeding, emphasizing that not all inbreeding is harmful.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination presents a significant challenge in global agriculture. This study explores the efficacy of chemical induction, specifically using sodium chloride (NaCl), to limit Cd uptake in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and assesses its impact on essential divalent metal ions (DMIs). We conducted a comprehensive analysis encompassing ion absorption, root histology, and biochemistry to understand the influence of this method. Our results revealed that NaCl induction led to a notable 30 % decrease in Cd absorption, while maintaining minimal impact on zinc (Zn) uptake. Intriguingly, the absence of essential DMIs, such as calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and Zn, was found to diminish the plant's capacity to absorb Cd. Furthermore, moderate NaCl induction resulted in an increased diameter of the root stele and enhanced lignin content, indicating a restriction of Cd absorption through the apoplastic pathway. Conversely, a compensatory absorption mechanism via the symplastic pathway appeared to be activated in the absence of essential elements. These findings highlight the potential of chemical induction as a strategy to mitigate agricultural Cd risks, offering insights into the complex interplay between plant ion transport pathways and metal uptake regulation.

Vaccine hesitancy is a global threat to public health. Hesitant individuals pose a major concern, as they can be viewed as a source of infection, which may lead to another outbreak. Effective strategies are needed to increase uptake, decrease hesitancy, and achieve herd immunity. This study aims to identify the impact of implemented strategies on COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and uptake among final-year pharmacy students, and their acceptance and attitudes towards mandatory COVID-19 vaccination. An anonymous, internet-based cross-sectional study was developed using Google Forms and administered to final-year pharmacy students (254) at all pharmacy colleges in Wad Medani city, Sudan between August and September 2022. Overall, 30.7 % of students were hesitant to get the COVID-19 vaccine. The majority of students, 69.3 %, were already vaccinated and 60.9 % of them were initially hesitant about getting the vaccine but eventually did so. Receiving the COVID-19 vaccine was significantly associated with the institution students attended (p < 0.001). Institutions that had implemented encouraging vaccination strategies had a higher percentage of vaccinated students: 84.2 % and 77.1 %, compared to the institution that did not adopt any vaccination strategies 28.3 %. Availability of COVID-19 vaccines to students (OR 1.67 CI (0.70-3.96)), and encouraging COVID-19 vaccination in a way close to mandatory (OR 4.29, CI (1.85-9.96)) had the highest odds in increasing the vaccination uptake. While, not implementing any vaccination strategy (OR 0.24, CI (0.07-0.85) was less likely to increase vaccination uptake. Also, it was found that 72.5 % of students would accept mandatory vaccination for COVID-19. This study provides policymakers with evidence-based strategies that could increase the uptake and decrease hesitancy toward COVID-19 vaccines among a group of university students. Policymakers should encourage all universities to provide COVID-19 vaccines to their students, either through clinics or vaccination campaigns, and consider mandating the COVID-19 vaccine.

BACKGROUND: Irrational use of antibiotics intensifies resistance and jeopardizes advances made in modern medicine. We aimed to conduct a baseline gap analysis survey on antibiotic prescription practices across Pakistan. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This multi-centered cross-sectional survey was conducted at six public sector tertiary care hospitals from February 2021 to March 2021. Data related to various variables including hospital infrastructure, policies and practices, monitoring and feedback, and epidemiological, clinical, and antibiotic prescription for surveyed patients was collected using World Health Organization (WHO) Point Prevalence Survey (PPS) methodology. RESULTS: In a survey of 837 inpatients, 78.5% were prescribed antibiotics. Most commonly prescribed antimicrobial was ceftriaxone (21.7%), followed by metronidazole (17.3%), cefoperazone-sulbactam (8.4%), amoxicillin-clavulanate (6.3%), and piperacillin/tazobactam (5.9%). Surgical prophylaxis (36.7%) and community-acquired infections (24.7%) were the main reasons for antibiotic prescriptions. Single antibiotics were given to 46.7% of patients, 39.9% received a combination of two antibiotics, and 12.5% were prescribed three or more antibiotics. Among six hospitals surveyed, two had drug and therapeutic committees, three had infection prevention and control committees, and one had an antibiotic formulary. CONCLUSION: Findings demonstrate high consumption of broad-spectrum antimicrobials and emphasize the importance of expanding antimicrobial stewardship programs among hospitals. Mentoring clinical teams could help rationalize antimicrobial use.

There are numerous scenarios where the photographer is in difficulty and unable to capture or shoot video as required. This could be due to several factors such as limited space, decreased visibility, and an obstacle in the way. Therefore, this project implements the idea to capture and shoot video of the desired subject through an automatically controlled robotic camera with no need for a photographic bloke. The system comprises functions such as detection, tracking, live streaming, and video/audio recording along with the features of Radio-Frequency-Identification (RFID). Therefore, this robotic camera will detect the desired subject, track and focus it with the help of its position driven through movable motors sensing the RFID tag in case the object is non-stationary. The video/audio will be recorded on a computer along with the live streaming available on an Android-based device. The Viola-Jones algorithm of the image processing technique is used to detect the particular subject features and C for accessing the movable camera protocols. The RFID transmitter and receiver are used to sense the RFID card and serve the purpose to track the subject using the algorithms of image processing, with the advantage of ignoring other obstacles between the camera and the detected subject. Thus, adding a novel functionality to the existing systems, that lacks the feature of focusing the camera on the subject, when an obstacle is detected in between. The live streaming is achieved wirelessly through an open-source platform X-operating system, Apache, MySQL, Php, Perl (XAMPP). The idea is verified through concluded arrangements in self-made scenarios in response to the speed, distance, light, and background noise of the detected subject, which delivered encouraging results. Therefore, the designed system can be used for live conferences, seminars, and other multimedia-required arrangements.

Vaccination is an important strategy in the fight against COVID-19. Although Sudan received vaccines since March 2021, vaccine uptake is very low. This study aimed to determine COVID-19 vaccine uptake and hesitancy in one of the largest Urban settings in Sudan. A survey was done among adults from 15 market places in Wad Medani city. Collected data included; demographic characteristics, vaccination status, type of received vaccine, number of received doses, side effects experienced after vaccination and reasons for refusing or delaying vaccination. In total, 1323 questionnaires were eligible for analysis. Most respondents were male (55.5%), younger than 60 years of age (89.5%) and received some sort of formal education (92.7%). Education level was significantly associated with vaccination uptake (p < 0.001). At the time of the study; 33.2%, 42%, 16.8% and 8% of participants were vaccinated, willing to receive vaccination, rejecting vaccination or haven't decided to receive a COVID-19 vaccine yet respectively. The most common reason for rejection indicated by participants was safety concerns (79.3%). Reasons for hesitance expressed by 64% of participant who said they were willing to take the vaccine were unavailability and difficult access to vaccines. Participants who expressed willingness to receive COVID-19 vaccine (42%) or were undecided (8%) were invited to a vaccination campaign. Of these, 27.9% attended and received their first shot of COVID-19 vaccine. Education level seems to be the main determinant for vaccination hesitancy. Safety concerns seem to play a major role in rejecting and delaying COVID-19 vaccination. Assuring vaccine's safety seems to be the way forward to reduce concerns about vaccination safety. Hesitancy was also shown to be partially related to difficulty in access to vaccines and a large proportion of the population are expected to receive the vaccine by improving availability and access.

Poverty is strongly associated with all-cause and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) mortality. Less is known about the contribution of poverty to spirometrically defined chronic airflow obstruction (CAO)-a key characteristic of COPD. Using cross-sectional data from an asset-based questionnaire to define poverty in 21 sites of the Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease study, we estimated the risk of CAO attributable to poverty. Up to 6% of the population over 40 years had CAO attributable to poverty. Understanding the relationship between poverty and CAO might suggest ways to improve lung health, especially in low-income and middle-income countries.

The decline in farm revenue due to volatile milk prices has led to an increase in the use of beef semen in dairy herds. While this strategy ("Beef-on-dairy" (BoD)) can have economic benefits, it can also lead to unintended consequences affecting animal welfare. Semen sale trends from breeding organizations depict increasing sales of beef semen across the globe. Calves born from such breeding strategies can perform better when compared to purebred dairy calves, especially in terms of meat quality and growth traits. The Beef-on-dairy strategy can lead to unintentional negative impacts including an increase in gestation length, and increased dystocia and stillbirth rates. Studies in this regard have found the highest gestation length for Limousin crossbred calves followed by calves from the Angus breed. This increase in gestation length can lead to economic losses ranging from 3 to 5 US$ per animal for each additional day. In terms of the growth performance of crossbred animals, literature studies are inconclusive due to the vast differences in farming structure across the regions. But almost all the studies agree regarding improvement in the meat quality in terms of color, fiber type, and intra-muscular fat content for crossbred animals. Utilization of genomic selection, and development of specialized Beef-on-dairy indexes for the sires, can be a viable strategy to make selection easier for the farmers.

BACKGROUND: Spirometric small airways obstruction (SAO) is common in the general population. Whether spirometric SAO is associated with respiratory symptoms, cardiometabolic diseases, and quality of life (QoL) is unknown. METHODS: Using data from the Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease study (N = 21,594), we defined spirometric SAO as the mean forced expiratory flow rate between 25 and 75% of the FVC (FEF25-75) less than the lower limit of normal (LLN) or the forced expiratory volume in 3 s to FVC ratio (FEV3/FVC) less than the LLN. We analysed data on respiratory symptoms, cardiometabolic diseases, and QoL collected using standardised questionnaires. We assessed the associations with spirometric SAO using multivariable regression models, and pooled site estimates using random effects meta-analysis. We conducted identical analyses for isolated spirometric SAO (i.e. with FEV1/FVC ≥ LLN). RESULTS: Almost a fifth of the participants had spirometric SAO (19% for FEF25-75; 17% for FEV3/FVC). Using FEF25-75, spirometric SAO was associated with dyspnoea (OR = 2.16, 95% CI 1.77-2.70), chronic cough (OR = 2.56, 95% CI 2.08-3.15), chronic phlegm (OR = 2.29, 95% CI 1.77-4.05), wheeze (OR = 2.87, 95% CI 2.50-3.40) and cardiovascular disease (OR = 1.30, 95% CI 1.11-1.52), but not hypertension or diabetes. Spirometric SAO was associated with worse physical and mental QoL. These associations were similar for FEV3/FVC. Isolated spirometric SAO (10% for FEF25-75; 6% for FEV3/FVC), was also associated with respiratory symptoms and cardiovascular disease. CONCLUSION: Spirometric SAO is associated with respiratory symptoms, cardiovascular disease, and QoL. Consideration should be given to the measurement of FEF25-75 and FEV3/FVC, in addition to traditional spirometry parameters.

The article describes a rare case of bullous scabies in a 30-year-old female. Scabies is a skin condition caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei and is typically transmitted through skin-to-skin contact. Bullous scabies is a rare presentation of scabies and is characterized by tense bullae and blisters that resemble bullous pemphigoid. The patient presented with pruritus, bullae on the hands and feet, and papules on various body parts. After a provisional diagnosis of scabies was made, microscopic examination confirmed the presence of mites and eggs. The patient was treated with Permethrin cream and antihistamines, and her symptoms regressed over the next two months. The husband and two other family members also reported improvement after treatment. While bullous scabies is an uncommon presentation of scabies, it is important to consider it in the differential diagnosis for patients presenting with bullae and pruritus. The exact pathophysiology of bullous scabies is yet to be determined, but theories include a staph aureus superinfection or production of autoantibodies in response to scabies lytic enzymes. Early recognition and appropriate treatment can lead to good outcomes in patients with bullous scabies.

BACKGROUND: Over 500 million people live with chronic respiratory diseases globally and approximately 4 million of these, mostly from the low- and middle-income countries including sub-Saharan Africa, die prematurely every year. Despite high CRD morbidity and mortality, only very few studies describe CRDs and little is known about the economic, social and psychological dimensions of living with CRDs in sub-Saharan Africa. We aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of the social, livelihood and psychological dimensions of living with CRD to inform management of CRDs in Sudan and Tanzania. METHOD: We conducted 12 in-depth interviews in 2019 with people with known or suspected CRD and 14 focus group discussions with community members in Gezira state, Sudan and Dodoma region, Tanzania, to share their understanding and experience with CRD. The data was analysed using thematic framework analysis. RESULTS: People with CRD in both contexts reported experiences under two broad themes: impact on economic wellbeing and impact on social and psychological wellbeing. Capacity to do hard physical work was significantly diminished, resulting in direct and indirect economic impacts for them and their families. Direct costs were incurred while seeking healthcare, including expenditures on transportation to health facility and procurement of diagnostic tests and treatments, whilst loss of working hours and jobs resulted in substantial indirect costs. Enacted and internalised stigma leading to withdrawal and social exclusion was described by participants and resulted partly from association of chronic cough with tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. In Sudan, asthma was described as having negative impact on marital prospects for young women and non-disclosure related to stigma was a particular issue for young people. Impaired community participation and restrictions on social activity led to psychological stress for both people with CRD and their families. CONCLUSION: Chronic respiratory diseases have substantial social and economic impacts among people with CRD and their families in Sudan and Tanzania. Stigma is particularly strong and appears to be driven partly by association of chronic cough with infectiousness. Context-appropriate measures to address economic impacts and chronic cough stigma are urgently needed as part of interventions for chronic respiratory diseases in these sub-Saharan African contexts.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has been associated with exposures in the workplace. We aimed to assess the association of respiratory symptoms and lung function with occupation in the Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease study. METHODS: We analysed cross-sectional data from 28 823 adults (≥40 years) in 34 countries. We considered 11 occupations and grouped them by likelihood of exposure to organic dusts, inorganic dusts and fumes. The association of chronic cough, chronic phlegm, wheeze, dyspnoea, forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1)/FVC with occupation was assessed, per study site, using multivariable regression. These estimates were then meta-analysed. Sensitivity analyses explored differences between sexes and gross national income. RESULTS: Overall, working in settings with potentially high exposure to dusts or fumes was associated with respiratory symptoms but not lung function differences. The most common occupation was farming. Compared to people not working in any of the 11 considered occupations, those who were farmers for ≥20 years were more likely to have chronic cough (OR 1.52, 95% CI 1.19-1.94), wheeze (OR 1.37, 95% CI 1.16-1.63) and dyspnoea (OR 1.83, 95% CI 1.53-2.20), but not lower FVC (ß=0.02 L, 95% CI -0.02-0.06 L) or lower FEV1/FVC (ß=0.04%, 95% CI -0.49-0.58%). Some findings differed by sex and gross national income. CONCLUSION: At a population level, the occupational exposures considered in this study do not appear to be major determinants of differences in lung function, although they are associated with more respiratory symptoms. Because not all work settings were included in this study, respiratory surveillance should still be encouraged among high-risk dusty and fume job workers, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Small airways obstruction is a common feature of obstructive lung diseases. Research is scarce on small airways obstruction, its global prevalence, and risk factors. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of small airways obstruction, examine the associated risk factors, and compare the findings for two different spirometry parameters. METHODS: The Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease study is a multinational cross-sectional study of 41 municipalities in 34 countries across all WHO regions. Adults aged 40 years or older who were not living in an institution were eligible to participate. To ensure a representative sample, participants were selected from a random sample of the population according to a predefined site-specific sampling strategy. We included participants' data in this study if they completed the core study questionnaire and had acceptable spirometry according to predefined quality criteria. We excluded participants with a contraindication for lung function testing. We defined small airways obstruction as either mean forced expiratory flow rate between 25% and 75% of the forced vital capacity (FEF25-75) less than the lower limit of normal or forced expiratory volume in 3 s to forced vital capacity ratio (FEV3/FVC ratio) less than the lower limit of normal. We estimated the prevalence of pre-bronchodilator (ie, before administration of 200 µg salbutamol) and post-bronchodilator (ie, after administration of 200 µg salbutamol) small airways obstruction for each site. To identify risk factors for small airways obstruction, we performed multivariable regression analyses within each site and pooled estimates using random-effects meta-analysis. FINDINGS: 36 618 participants were recruited between Jan 2, 2003, and Dec 26, 2016. Data were collected from participants at recruitment. Of the recruited participants, 28 604 participants had acceptable spirometry and completed the core study questionnaire. Data were available for 26 443 participants for FEV3/FVC ratio and 25 961 participants for FEF25-75. Of the 26 443 participants included, 12 490 were men and 13 953 were women. Prevalence of pre-bronchodilator small airways obstruction ranged from 5% (34 of 624 participants) in Tartu, Estonia, to 34% (189 of 555 participants) in Mysore, India, for FEF25-75, and for FEV3/FVC ratio it ranged from 5% (31 of 684) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to 31% (287 of 924) in Salzburg, Austria. Prevalence of post-bronchodilator small airways obstruction was universally lower. Risk factors significantly associated with FEV3/FVC ratio less than the lower limit of normal included increasing age, low BMI, active and passive smoking, low level of education, working in a dusty job for more than 10 years, previous tuberculosis, and family history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Results were similar for FEF25-75, except for increasing age, which was associated with reduced odds of small airways obstruction. INTERPRETATION: Despite the wide geographical variation, small airways obstruction is common and more prevalent than chronic airflow obstruction worldwide. Small airways obstruction shows the same risk factors as chronic airflow obstruction. However, further research is required to investigate whether small airways obstruction is also associated with respiratory symptoms and lung function decline. Food security is facing a major threat from salinity and there is a need to develop salt tolerant crop varieties to ensure that the demand for food from the world's increasing population is met. Salinity mostly occurs in arid and semi-arid regions. It may cause many adverse physiological effects on plants, i.e., toxic ion accumulation, disturbed osmotic potential, and decreased crop yield. The present study aimed to investigate the morphological, physiological, biochemical, and genetic parameters of wheat genotypes under salt stress. Six wheat genotypes were screened for salt tolerance at the seedling and maturity stage. Seeds were sown at 0 and 150 mM of salinity level. Biochemical traits, i.e., shoot/root fresh and dry weight, chlorophyll a/b and total chlorophyll contents, shoot nitrogen, shoot phosphorus, proline, and carbohydrates were measured. Wheat genotypes showed a significant increase in free amino acids, shoot nitrogen, and total soluble proteins under saline conditions. Higher Na+/K+ ratio and free amino acids were estimated under 150 mM NaCl treatment in Pasban-90 and found to be the most salt-tolerant genotype. By contrast, reduced proline, total chlorophyll, and Na+/K+ ratio were found in Kohistan-97 marking it to be sensitive to stress. Expression analysis of HKTs genes was performed to validate the results of two contrasting genotypes. The differential expression of HKT2; 1 and HKT2; 3 explained the tissue and genotype specific epigenetic variations. Our findings indicated that these selected genotypes can be further used for molecular studies to find out QTLs/genes related to salinity. This suggests that, in contrasting wheat genotypes, there is a differentially induced defense response to salt stress, indicating a functional correlation between salt stress tolerance and differential expression pattern in wheat.

Background: Lifelong blood transfusion is recommended for patients with transfusion-dependent thalassemia (TDT) that lead to iron overload and results in cardiomyopathy (CM). Aim: To assess the accuracy of several electrocardiographic (ECG) data in patients at high risk of arrhythmia, early detection of structural and functional changes in left atrium and ventricle using ECG and echocardiography (two dimensional, M-mode echocardiography along with Doppler studies), and to observe the correlations between plasma B-type atrial natriuretic peptide (BNP)/serum ferritin and ECG with Doppler as well as echocardiographic changes in patients with TDT. Methods: The current prospective case-control study included 75 TDT patients and 74 control subjects with the mean age of 9.55 and 9.93 years, respectively. Participants were assessed for the socio-demographic, physical examinations, serum ferritin, plasma BNP, ECG, 2D echocardiography, and tissue/pulse wave Doppler. Results: The mean of serum ferritin and plasma BNP were significantly (p<0.001) higher in the cases (1475.19 ng/mL and 47.63 pg/mL, respectively) than controls (41.3 ng/mL and BNP 23.37 pg/mL, respectively). ECG findings showed significant higher P-wave dispersion, QRS duration, QT duration and dispersion, and JTc dispersion in cases than controls. Echocardiography findings revealed diastolic dysfunction with preserved ejection fraction (EF) in thalassemia cases, as well as significant higher left ventricular (LV) mass, LV internal diameters during systole and diastole (LVIDs and d) and LV posterior wall thickness during diastole (LVPWd) in cases than controls (p<0.05). Also, a significant (p<0.05) correlation between BNP and QT dispersion was found in patients. Conclusion: These findings suggest the usefulness of ECG, 2D echocardiographic, Doppler studies and plasma BNP, with no significant beneficial effect of serum ferritin level in detecting early cardiac changes in patients with TDT.

Xyloglucan is a quantitatively major polysaccharide in the primary cell walls of flowering plants and has been reported to affect plants' ability to tolerate toxic elements. However, it is not known if altering the amounts of xyloglucan in the wall influences the uptake and translocation of inorganic arsenic (As). Here, we identified two Nicotiana tabacum genes that encode xyloglucan-specific xylosyltransferases (XXT), which we named NtXXT1 and NtXXT2. We used CRISPR-Cas9 technology to generate ntxxt1, ntxxt2, and ntxxt1/2 mutant tobacco plants to determine if preventing xyloglucan synthesis affects plant growth and their ability to accumulate As. We show that NtXXT1 and NtXXT2 are required for xyloglucan biosynthesis because no discernible amounts of xyloglucan were present in the cell walls of the ntxxt1/2 double mutant. The tobacco double mutant (ntxxt1/2) and the corresponding Arabidopsis mutant (atxxt1/2) do not have severe growth defects but do have a short root hair phenotype and a slow growth rate. This phenotype is rescued by overexpressing NtXXT1 or NtXXT2 in atxxt1/2. Growing ntxxt mutants in the presence of AsIII or AsV showed that the absence of cell wall xyloglucan affects the accumulation and translocation of As. Most notably, root retention of As increased substantially and the amounts of As translocated to the shoots decreased in ntxxt1/2. Our results suggest that xyloglucan-deficient plants provide a strategy for the phytoremediation of As contaminated soils.

Multi-ovary wheat (three pistil) is a unique germplasm for the seed production of hybrid wheat. The purpose of the present study was to transfer the multi-ovary trait to semi-dwarf plants to increase the production of grains in wheat crops. Therefore, tall, semi-dwarf, and dwarf plants were crossed with plants with the three-pistil trait. A three-pistil tall plant was used as the female parent, while tall (Synthetic hexaploid), semi-dwarf, and dwarf plants were used as male parents. F1 and F2 progenies with parents were planted in 2015-16 using RCBD. The outcome of the crosses showed that multi-ovary tall plants gave significant difference for all five traits (days to maturity, plant height, number of seeds per spike, grain weight per spike, and grain yield per unit area) in both generations. The greatest number of grains per spike and grain yield per unit area were obtained from the cross of three-pistil tall and dwarf parent (P1/P6) in the F1 and F2 generations. The cross also resulted in a significant reduction in height (96 cm). Further heterosis studies conducted with crosses between three-pistil tall and dwarf parent (P1/P6) showed the greatest heterosis and heterobeltiosis for the number of grains per spike (60.0 and 26.19%, respectively) and grain yield per m2 (27.68 and 2.85%, respectively). In the case of grain weight per spike, the heterosis value was also positive and significant (17.7). Meanwhile, for other traits, their values were negative for heterosis and heterobeltiosis. High numbers of grains and grain weight were found to be associated with positive heterobeltiosis and in turn the grain yield per m2, but plant height and maturity had negative affirmation with heterobeltiosis. Heterosis studies also indicated the dominant gene action for the three-pistil trait. Thus, the study clearly signified that grain yield can be increased by using the multi-ovary genotype with the semi-dwarf height. This new germplasm will be helpful for breeders to increase the production of wheat crops in the southern climate of Pakistan.
